Your
cruise ship docks at the Port of Piraeus, about seven
miles from Athens. A seaport for thousands of years,
there are actually two other harbors here for ferries
and private vessels. There are a
number of inexpensive restaurants around Piraeus. One is
listed below.
By all means while in Greece you must
try the gyro, pronounced "hero", just like in America.
Except these are not like American heroes at all.
Roasted lamb or pork is sliced from a vertical rotating
spit (gyro) into a warm, folded pita bread and topped
with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, onions and tzatkiki
(yogurt, garlic, cucumber, olive oil and lemon juice).

Retsina, the Greek wine produced since
ancient times, is so called because it is aged, briefly,
in sealed vessels sealed with pine pitch. It is
said to be an acquired taste. I'll agree; I acquired it
immediately. Try a glass, then you'll try a pitcher.
Greek salad, too, is different here -
no lettuce, but delicious. |
